The Biggest Online Slot Game Wins In History

by James Smith

It was back in October 2015 when the life of a British soldier changed forever with one simple act. Jon Heywood, on a whim, decided to try the slot games at an online casino. He registered for a new player account, made a deposit and set to work.

Playing at just 25p a spin, in his first evening of gaming he landed the jackpot prize of his chosen slot game: overnight, he became £13,213,836.68 richer, and this remains the largest online slots payout in history. Heywood’s first purchase? A Bentley Continental GT. Possibly due to the shock, who knows, Heywood even went into work the next day…

Mega Fortune: How Apt

There is one jackpot slot game that is responsible for three of the biggest slot wins in history. Mega Fortune is a game from one of the leading slot developers in the business, NetEnt, and it is attached to a progressive jackpot. What that means is that every player who loads it up pays into the central jackpot prize, whether they’re in Aberdeen or Timbuctoo. As you can imagine, the kitty increases rather dramatically until somebody wins it. The title has delivered a trio of monumental winners: a Finnish player scooped just over £15 million in 2013, a Norwegian man landed a £10.1 million payday and another Scandinavian, this time from Sweden, won a cool £7.5 million on the reels of Mega Fortune.

In the Lap of the Gods

Maybe it’s time to sell up and head north to Scandinavia. They seem to have a habit of cleaning up the major jackpot slot wins, and another entry into our hall of fame came, ironically, from Hall of Gods. Another Swedish gamer got in the act on the NetEnt progressive slot, revealing the jackpot symbols on their reels that would trigger the payout of a hefty £6.5 million. He or she would have felt rather godly after seeing that prize hit their bank account…

Plate Smashing Celebration

There is a tradition in Greece to smash plates as part of celebrations such as weddings. You can imagine that one man, known only as Georgios M, would have been reaching for the crockery after his huge payout on the reels. He was playing the Mega Moolah game and he couldn’t believe his eyes when the jackpot symbols landed on his screen. Developer Microgaming is responsible for some of the most popular jackpot slot machines, with recent entries including licensed properties such as Tomb Raider-based Lara Croft: Temple and Tombs, which sits alongside the mobile slots at Magical Vegas Casino. Georgios’ payout? A handsome cheque for £5.4 million. It makes you want to smash your dinner plate in jealousy.

Excalibur Shows its Mettle

Up until now, all of the wins on our list have been made online with games readily available to most players. But we thought we’d save the final word for the biggest slot game win of all time, which came at a bricks-and-mortar casino in the USA.

The winner, who we know only works (or presumably ‘worked’ is the correct phrase) as a software engineer in Los Angeles. He won £30 million on the Megabucks game at the Excalibur Casino in Las Vegas, which remains the biggest payout in history. Indeed, the sum was so large that the winner agreed to 25 yearly payments of just over £1 million, rather than banking the whole sum at once.

Playing slot games should be fun, first and foremost, with the possibility of winning cash prizes a handy carrot on the side. Clearly, there are some ginormous cheques just waiting to be banked!
