‘NXT: UK’ Review (Jan 30th 2019)

by Nathan Favel

Welcome to this week’s NXT: UK review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have NXT, but in Europe. Is that specific enough?

Match #1: “Bomber” Dave Mastiff def. “Primate” Jay Melrose

The following is courtesy of WWE.com:

Jay Melrose opened the latest episode of NXT UK by unleashing an animalistic effort against the still-undefeated monster Dave Mastiff. When he attempted to lift the “Bomber” onto his shoulder, however, his poor judgment proved to be his undoing. And after completely flattening the “Primate,” Mastiff finished him off with the Cannonball into the corner.

My Take: 2 out of 5 – This was done before you could even begin to miss it.

Match #2: WALTER def. Jack Starz

The following is courtesy of WWE.com:

After making his presence known at NXT UK TakeOver: Blackpool, the intense, towering, old-world throwback competitor that is WALTER debuted against the unfortunate Jack Starz. After starting the bout with a thunderous chop and a brutal assault outside the ring, “The Austrian Anomaly” finished off his foe with a fierce dropkick and an earth-shattering powerbomb that echoed throughout the arena.

My Take: 2.5 out of 5 – WALTER looked good in this squash victory over Starz.

Match #3: Jinny def. Kasey Owens

The following is courtesy of WWE.com:

In her match against Kasey Owens, a 10-year veteran who trained in Belfast, Jinny made her point early by executing a brutal Flatliner on Owens into the turnbuckle before driving her into the ringside barricade. Then, in the height of the action, after overcoming some impressive offense from her opponent late in the contest, The Fashionista finished her off with an authoritative X-Factor to score another victory.

My Take: 2.5 out of 5 – This came and went without much to say for or against it, but there are some matches like that and this was one of them.

Match #4: Moustache Mountain def. Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner

The following is courtesy of WWE.com:

In NXT UK’s main event, Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner were out to prove that they should have been in the tournament to crown the first-ever NXT UK Tag Team Champions. And though Barthel & Aichner nearly overcame the former NXT Tag Team Champions in the incredible back-and-forth tag team showdown, the “Big Strong Bois” overcame their highly effective opponents with the full nelson into a clothesline into the snap dragon suplex.

My Take: 3 out of 5 – This was a fun main event that had some strong wrestling, despite not becoming a great match in the process. There was a nice theme of redemption here, with Barthel and Aichner trying to prove they should have been the first NXT tag champions. I wouldn’t mind seeing these teams fight a few more times.

News Of The Night:

  1. WALTER fights Mark Coffey, next week.
  2. Ligero fights Mark Andrews, next week.

Final Verdict: 2.5/5

This was as by the numbers as you can get.
