‘Death House’ Interview: Kenny Ray Powell

by Philip Rogers

With the anticipated horror Death House being released in cinemas on February 23rd 2018, I got a chance to speak with actor Kenny Ray Powell about what to expect from the film, his role as the Death House Prison Warden and how he prepared for the role.

How did you first get into acting?

My mentor Bubba Smith from Police Academy (1984) introduce me to Jerry Sherlock I took his class at the New York Film Academy

You are in the upcoming horror film Death House. Can you tell us what we can expect from the film?

Yes, I am…. I will say if you’re an 80’s horror fan there will be a lot of Easter eggs in the film.  Gunner Hansen and Harrison Smith are very sleek with their plots.

How did you become involved in the film?

I became involved in the film by working previously with Robin DeMartino (casting director for Death House) she put me on available for the role as Commander Victor Galan. She sent me the breakdown of the character and Victor being 6’8 was my calling card it fit me perfect. A week later I received the green light from Factory Entertainment Production that I was cast for the role.

Can you tell me a little bit about your character?

My role as Commander Victor Galan is commanding… he is sleek, well dressed and educated. He is very knowledgeable about the historical mysteries of the villains and evils of the prison The Death House.

What preparation did you do for the role?

I prepared myself by studying the mannerism of prison sardens in correction facilities and watched Shawshank Redemption (1994). I focused on their character good and bad.

Death House has assembled the biggest cast of horror icons in one film. What was it like being a central part of the story in such a landmark film?

I was thrilled to be a part of such a cast. I am very humble and blessed to be a part of history.

What was your favourite scene to film in the movie?

The riot is my favourite scene.

If given the opportunity are there any characters which you would like the opportunity to portray on screen?

Two franchises: Marvel or DC Comics.

Do you have any other projects which you are working on at the moment?

A film called Stan the Man (2018)

If someone is looking to get into acting, what advice would you give them?

I would start with telling any student that they need to start with’ taking an acting class. Learn how take directions because roles change on the fly. Learn how to accept your wins- whether small or big it’s still a win. Also know that there will be lots of no’s before your yes (at least for most of us…  lol).  And please have fun.
