Sci-Fi Weekender 9 Update… More Guests, More Entertainment!

by Kevin Haldon

With a hiss of brakes, and a rush of steam, the next phase of SFW9’s launch is engaged. We have lots and lots to tell you, so settle down, grab your beverage of choice, put your feet up, and let’s go!

That’s right folks… Its time to start planning for SFW9, coming to you next March in Wales and we have a little bit of bad news but a massive whole bunch of good news to soften that blow. First things first though: there are only 18, yes 18 rooms left on site for the weekend so if you don’t have your tickets then you better get on that now. So first off here is a little comment from SFW themselves with a little bad news…

First off, the bad news … As regular SFWers know, sometimes guests have to drop out, and since the last announcement, both Colin Baker and Ingveld Delia have let us know that they have other commitments which prevent them from joining us in March … We’re sorry we won’t have them with us.

These kind of things are very much part and parcel and the final line-up is always subject to change so fear not fellow geeks. However the guys have been busy working away to bring in some replacement guests and the list is only getting stronger. Lets take a cheeky look…

WILLIAM HOPE: Aliens (1986) as Lt. Gorman. Scanners (1981), Hellbound: Hellraiser II(1988), Aliens vsPredator II Computer Game (2001) and numerous other Alien franchise games, XxX (2002), Labyrinth (2003), Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004), Episodes (2011), Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), Spooks (2011), Spiders 3D (2013) and Thunderbirds are Go (2015).

ROSS MULLAN: an established Puppeteer and voice over artist having trained with Jim Henson’s company many years ago. He is the voice and spirit behind Nev the Bear on CBBC’s Bear Behaving Badly. Ross is most recognizable as the evil Numbertaker from Cbeebies’ hit show Numberjacks. Heuses his 6’4” height to good effect as the WhiteWalker on HBO’s Game of Thrones, The Silence and The Teller on Doctor Who and in Clash of the Titans he plays Pemphredo, one of the three blind Stygian witches.

IAN WHYTE was born in Bangor, North Wales and brought up in Brighton. In 2004, his physical attributes (he is 7’1” tall!), his mental toughness and flair for the theatrical made him the perfect man to play the part of the iconic Predator in Alien Vs. Predator, to critical acclaim. In 2007 Ian reprised the role of the Predator in AVP:Requiem, and in 2010 reprised the character of MadameMaxime in Harry Potter andthe Deathly Hallows: Part 1. He also appears as the fearsome and sinister Gregor Clegane, ‘The Mountain that Rides’, in the second season of Game of Thrones.

ADAM BROWN is an English actor, Adam’s first film role came when he was cast as the dwarf Ori in the three-part adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. He is co-founder of the comedy writing/performing team – ‘Plested and Brown’. Shows include; CarolSmillie Trashed my Room, The Reconditioned Wife Show, Flamingo Flamingo Flamingo, Hot Pursuit, Minor Spectacular, Health & Stacey and The Perfect Wife Roadshow. He has worked with David Sant (Peepolykus), Phelim McDermot (Improbable) and Cal McCrystal (Mighty Boosh) and of course Pirates of the Caribbean

So as you can see when a couple of guests drop out the frame SFW brings you a handful more to fill the “Main Void”. Just in case you needed reminding here is a a cheeky list of who the new faces will be joining: CHRISTOPHER JUDGE (Stargate), HUGH QUARSHIE (Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Highlander, Doctor Who) and ALISTAIR PETRI (Rogue One).

Something we loved about SFW last March was that yes you are going to see some stars from the screen… Obviously, however they like to bring you the guys who make the magic happen for your eyes. Including Make-Up artists, Costume Design, Cherographers, Cosplayers and many many many more. This year that includes:

GEOFF PORTASS is a prosthetics and make-up artist who came to prominence for his work on Highlander (1986), Hellraiser (1987) and Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988). He has also worked on Lifeforce (1985), Nightbreed (1990), The Lair of the White Worm (1988), and the Messiah (2001) and Children of Dune (2003) TV series’. Geoff will be joining us to talk effects and make-up and to discuss his work with Clive Barker on the various projects they worked on together.

MARK CORDORY returns to SFW with more talk of special props and gadgets for Doctor Who and others. Mark is a designer, props and puppet maker in the TV and film industry. He worked on productions such as Knightmare, Torchwood, Fireman Sam and The Corpse Bride, he also designed and made Eddie for Iron Maiden.

ANDREW LAWDEN is known for his work on Prime Suspect1973 (2017), Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999) and Top Boy (2011). While working on Star Wars (as stand-in for Liam Neeson’s character Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and also as a Naboo Royal Guard) he learned how to fight with Light Sabers, and developed his Jedi Fighting tutorial workshops which he has brought to conventions across the world. He will be presenting several fighting tutorials at SFW and details of how to sign up will be available on the day.

But Kev what about the “cock-a-doody” writers and creators… Well dont worry you are covered on that front too my friends. There’s a veritable library of writers. Some are back by popular demand, and some are attending for the first time.  Alongside the amazing KEVIN J ANDERSON and STEVEN SAVILE are:

GRAHAM MASTERTON is probably the biggest writer of horror currently working in the UK. His many novels include The Manitou (which was filmed in 1978), Family Portrait, The Doorkeepers, Ghost Music and Plague of the Manitou. He has also written many thrillers, family sagas, Crime, movie tie-ins and even sex instruction books. He’s a former editor of Mayfair and Penthouse Magazine and has had work adapted for television in Tony Scott’s The Hungerseries.

GEORGE MANN is a Sunday Times bestselling novelist and scriptwriter. He’s the author of the Newbury & Hobbes Victorian mystery series, as well as four novels about a 1920s vigilante known as The Ghost. BRYONY PEARCE is back at SFW after her staggering win at Just a Minute in Sheffield, determined to defend her title! Bryony studied English Literature at Cambridge University and after working in London for a few years she dedicated her time to writing. Her novel Angel’s Fury was longlisted for the Bransford Boase Award and won both the Leeds Book Award and the Cheshire Schools Book Award.

We also welcome back RAVEN DANE, popular author of dark fantasy and steampunk novels. With an Irish mother and Welsh father Raven is a true child of the Celtic Twilight! She started her career in writing as a journalist working for UK national magazines. The fictional bug bit her in the 1990s and she moved into writing novels. Her first books were published by DA in the 2000s, and she now has many titles in print. She contributed a story to the Doctor Who spin-off film, White Witch of Devil’s End (Reeltime Pictures, 2017) which featured stories about the life of Olive Hawthorne, a character from the 1971 Doctor Who story ‘The Daemons’. She is also a professional horse breeder, trainer and judge, specialising in Iberian horses. She has trained many horses, actors and stunt performers for film and TV and the results of her work can be seen in Dragonheart and First Knight amongst others. She enjoys amateur dramatics, comedy roles and pantomimes. She is an accomplished speaker and attends many events and festivals around the world to talk about writing.

DAWN HARRIS is a debut author whose first novel Diviner is being published and launched at SFW by Telos Publishing. She is keenly interested in psychology, science and nature and she has been involved in the worlds of fashion, interior design and hospitality. Most of all, however, she has been acknowledged for her dedication to charity work, and her support and encouragement for disadvantaged people.

Then there is the entertainment my friends and bloody hell with this entertainment they are really spoiling us… There’s the band Blues Harvest performing their own brand of music; the MMPORGSHOW returns after a spectacular success in Sheffield; and there’s the amazing Pop Up Puppet Theatre on hand to give some of their unique presentations!

We have THE SCOTTISH FALSETTO SOCK PUPPET THEATRE joining us for their own brand of madness as they take on Doctor Who and whatever else takes their fancy; there is a GLITTERBALLBINGO session being planned; and EXPERIMENTALSONICMACHINES return; fans of Burlesque will rejoice that NERDLESQUE are back with another late night show; and of course, Saturday night would not be Saturday night without the triumphant reappearance of John Robertson and THE DARK ROOM!

Darrens and flamboyant potatoes of the world rejoice! We have DJ LEROYspinning the decks into the night and presenting another video and music explosion to delight your eyes and ears; and we’re also pleased to announce that the awesome RADIOPHONIC WORKSHOP will be back to rock the rafters of Main Void with their unique and groundbreaking musical compositions … many of which you may recognise from over sixty years of television!

On top of all this, we are working on a stellar line-up of comic and graphic artists for THE STRIP CLUB; there’s another FILM PREMIERE being lined up, complete with cast and crew in attendance; traders are waiting in the wings to bring you the best in geek merchandise, books, comics, toys, artwork, CDs and whatever else takes your fancy; we have BOOK LAUNCHES already planned from Telos and Snow Books, with more publishers being courted to see if we can entice them to North Wales.

So as you lucky lucky people can see there is going to be plenty for you to keep yourself busy and that is all before you get down to the bar which is a must when you attend this event. Oh and hey, 365Flicks Podcast will also be in attendance for there second year so be sure to come see us have a crack, we will put you on the podcast and lets all just have another amazing SFW because lets face it… We Geek therefore we are.
