BBC announce the thirteenth ‘Doctor Who’

It was announced earlier this week that the new actor set to play Doctor Who, now that Peter Capaldi’s exit is imminent, would be named after the Wimbledon final today. Well, the final is over and we have the official word from the BBC… And the new Doctor is Jodie Whittaker (pictured above).

Who you may ask? Well Whittaker previously appeared as Beth in the acclaimed drama Broadchurch, alongside another former timelord, David Tennant. She will take over the role during this years Christmas special – which is set to air on December 25th. This final episode will be penned by both the departing showrunner Steven Moffat AND Chris Chibnall, who will be the series’ showrunner going forward.

Apparently Chibnall will start as he means to go on, and write Jodie Whittaker’s scenes in the festive special. Check out the official announcement below:
