God-Country-02

Well my friends it is that time again. God Country is back in our lives and it is back with a thundering crash. So last issue set up the relationship between Emmet Quinlan and his son, whose wife is not exactly pleased with having to look after the Alzheimers stricken old man.

Emmet Quinlan has awoken and he remembers everything! After being caged in his own body for a number of years with this heinous condition, everything returns to Emmet when he wields a God like sword with immense power. However with great power comes a whole bunch of people that want what you have. God Country #2 Sees Emmet visited by one such God who believes him not worthy enough to shoulder this immense burden. Upon realizing that should he hand over the weapon he will return to his previous state Emmet pretty much says “Nah your alright I think ill be fine”, Of course, I am paraphrasing. The visitor is sent packing back to where he came from, where we the reader see that this is may only be the beginning of Emmets journey into Gods Country as he defiantly sends a message to the powers that be.

I gushed over the strength of the writing in issue one from Donny Cates and this issue has taken it even further. There are a couple of extremely pivotal moments in the book, told in flashback form, that really smack you in the face with how serious, sincere and thought provoking they are. No spoilers but the couple of pages when he is remembering his wife, well they hit me like a proverbial kick to the unmentionables. Cates is doing a superb job of getting me invested in the foundations of this story, Coupled with the larger than life artwork that is setting the grandest stage… Well it’s a perfect match for me.

I said it last month and I am saying it again this month… I can’t wait till next month. You cant go wrong with this title on your pull list.

God Country #2 is out now from Image Comics.
