‘Billy Connolly: High Horse Tour Live’ Review

There are many comedians that spring to mind when you try to decide who are the funniest, but one of the most constant names to turn up on lists has to be Billy Connolly. We don’t tend to see much of his stand-up routines anymore, so when Billy Connolly: High Horse Tour Live was announced I made a point of grabbing the DVD.

At 72 you would wonder if Connolly had toned down, but thankfully this isn’t the case. Just listening him talk about his experiences as a Scottish comedian shows this. Full of topical humour, people who have felt down over the recent Donald Trump fiasco will be happy with the choice words that Billy decides to say in Billy Connolly: High Horse Tour Live. These comments will no doubt be even harsher now he knows that Trump won the election.

What makes Connolly a favourite of many comedy fans is the way he can tell a story, and it is easy to relate to it. His style is down to earth, and the way he corpses (laughs at himself) constantly relaxes the audience and lets us feel at home in his company.

One thing that the comedian lets us know through his humour is that he’s been through a hard time with his health. Not just suffering from Parkinson’s Disease he also suffered from cancer. The fact that he is now free of the cancer and can make jokes of it is both a relief for fans and welcome news. The fact that Connolly can make such ailments a subject for comedy is his skill as a comedian. He is a story-teller, and one of the best. He doesn’t need to get into shock tactics to keep his audience happy, he just knows what is funny.

Looking at the subjects he chooses to talk about, I was pleased that there didn’t seem to be any repeated material. People who know his routines better than me may be able to pick holes in that statement, but for the average fan this is Billy Connolly being funny, and quite honestly that is something we need now.

Billy Connolly: High Horse Tour Live is a good DVD to escape life with. We get to spend time with the legend that is Billy Connolly and most importantly enjoy both his comedy and company. It would be better to have been there live of course, but for those of us who couldn’t do that, this is the second-best thing.

I’m not sure that I can sit here and say this is one of his best shows, he has so many to choose from. What Billy Connolly: High Horse Tour Live is though is a show that stays funny through the routine and quite frankly never gets old. One of the greatest comedians still alive and still as cutting as ever, if you are a fan of Billy Connolly then do yourself a favour and buy this.

***** 5/5

Billy Connolly: High Horse Tour Live is available on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK now.
