Top 5: Sci-Fi Action Scenes

by Kat Wheat

Space battles, alien showdowns and, of course, light saber duels. Sci-Fi films are packed full of some of cinema’s greatest, and most visually stunning, action scenes, and upcoming sci-fi adventure Jupiter Ascending is no different.

Epic gravity boot chases through Chicago, military ships travelling vast distances and laser guns shoot outs aplenty, the film – starring Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum and Sean Bean – comes to cinemas from February 6th and to celebrate we take a look at the top five action scenes in sci-fi films:

1) Star Wars: A New Hope

With a Star Wars film, you’re pretty much guaranteed a great action scene. Nevertheless, it’s hard to beat the destruction of Death Star One in the very first film, Star Wars: A New Hope. Luke Skywalker takes an X-wing fighter for a run through the trenches of the enormous weapon, avoiding the assault from Darth Vader. Skywalker hears the voice of Kenobi and, guided by the Force, accurately fires a torpedo causing the battlestation to explode.

2) Aliens

The 1986 James Cameron film sees Sigourney Weaver return to the role of Ellen Ripley – and return in style she does. After watching team member Lance Bishop get torn in half, Ripley well and truly ups the ante. Donning a yellow power loader outfit she embarks on an epic battle against the angry Alien queen. The lesson here? Don’t mess with Ellen Ripley.

3) The Matrix

Jupiter Ascending co-directors, The Wachowski siblings first caught everyone’s attention and imagination with The Matrix. The now iconic fight between Neo and Agent Smith was unlike anything ever seen on a cinema screen before, the pair dealt superhuman blows in an underground tunnel, whilst also dodging bullets, trains and defying gravity.

4) Total Recall

The original, Schwarzenegger-led, Total Recall sees the Austrian former governor of California take on the role of regular guy Douglas Quaid, who takes a virtual reality trip to Mars. He’s thrown into a world where the lines between fantasy and reality are blurred. In one memorable scene, Arnie is disguised as a middle aged woman whose head explodes. Not one you’ll forget!

5) Jupiter Ascending

Full to the brim with exhilarating action sequences, Jupiter Ascending begins with a high-speed chase through the streets and sky of Chicago. Donning his gravity boots, Caine (Channing Tatum) rockets around the city fending off enemies and protecting heir to the universe’s throne Jupiter (Mila Kunis). Chicago takes a beating in this epic clash that will have you gasping for breath.
