‘WWE Hell in a Cell 2013’ Preview

by Chris Cummings

So, this coming Sunday is the annual Hell in a Cell event, an event in which two matches will be held inside the barbaric “Hell in a Cell” cage. It’s a match concept used to definitively end feuds and put an exclamation point at the end of a rivalry. Sunday’s event will feature six advertised matches (as of right now) and one pre-show match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship, so let’s get this preview and predictions thing underway, shall we?

Hell-in-a-Cell

The Matches

Hell in a Cell Pre-show – I-C Title Match – Curtis Axel (c) vs. Big E Langston

Curtis Axel has held the intercontinental title for a number of months and he puts the belt on the line here against Big E Langston. Now, Big E Langston only turned baby-face a week ago so the question mark remains as to whether or not the fans will accept the former Ziggler-muscle as a hero. There’s a chance we could see a title change here, though if that were the case I would imagine this match would have been added to the main card instead of the pre-show. For that reason alone, I think Axel will retain here.

Who Will Win? Curtis Axel

Tag Team Match – Los Matadores vs. The Real Americans

So, these two teams have been sort-of-feuding on television over the last couple of weeks, with Zeb Coulter being “gored” by El Torito at ringside at one point. This match will be the comedy relief match of the night, and I’m fine with that, it will be much better, content-wise, than the Santino/Khali stuff lately. I predict we will see Coulter and the bull run around ringside, and a Cesaro swing on the mascot at some point. I imagine this has been added purely to give this new Matador team some exposure, and fans a chance to calm down between big matches.

Who Will Win? Los Matadores

WWE Divas Championship Match – AJ Lee (c) vs. Brie Bella

So, Tamina will be in AJ’s corner here, and Nicole will be with her sister, Brie, so we can expect some interference and fighting outside the ring with these two at some point. As for the in-ring product, I don’t imagine this match will be anything special, and I don’t think it will go for more than five minutes either. Brie has improved in the ring lately, and AJ is good, so we might have an okay Divas contest here, but again, it’s little more than a “break” match.

Who Will Win? AJ Lee

WWE Tag Team Championship Match – Cody-dust (c) vs. The Shield vs. The Uso’s

Excuse my creation of “Cody-dust” as a name, but it’s quicker to type. Anyway, this is a match I am excited for. These teams have had some blinding battles on RAW in recent weeks and their chemistry is tested and they are on fire. I would love to see this be the beginning of a long-running three-way feud (like we saw in the early 00’s with The Dudley’s, The Hardyz & Edge and Christian) because these teams are talented and very over. I can see this being the match of the night, though the outcome is one I am unsure of. So, my result pick is a pure guess at this point.

Who Will Win? Cody-dust

Hell in a Cell Handicap Match – CM Punk vs. Ryback & Paul Heyman

Paul Heyman has been doing his best to defeat and embarrass his former protégé, CM Punk, in recent months, and we could maybe see it all come to a head here with this cell match. Will Punk get his hands on Heyman? Who knows, but if he does, that portion of the match won’t last long because I can see this feud lasting much longer and so the Punk/Heyman fight would have to continue to be put on hold until WWE decided to finish this rivalry between the two. Ryback will protect Heyman here and will throw Punk into the cage a lot, Punk will use the cage to hit some high spots, overall this will probably be entertaining, but I hope it doesn’t get given too long. If Punk does win, which I think he might, I imagine Heyman will be saved before the beating he receives is too harsh.

Who Will Win? CM Punk

World Heavyweight Championship Match – Alberto Del  Rio (c) vs. John Cena

John Cena returns here, much earlier than everyone thought he would, and there are a lot of question marks in the air prior to this match. Some are even speculating that the whole match is a ruse and Cena won’t compete at all, but I don’t think WWE would do that after so many people demanded their money back after the last couple of events failed to deliver what fans wanted. I can see this match being longer than many think it might be, because John Cena is all about “proving people wrong” and I imagine this will go on way too long. I can’t see how it can be a good match, to be honest, and if it does happen, as a pure one-on-one match, as advertised then there’s no way that ADR is retaining here, and for that reason…

Who Will Win? John Cena

Hell in a Cell Match for the WWE Championship – Randy Orton vs. Daniel Bryan
(With special guest referee – Shawn Michaels)

So, this match has been getting so much hype on television, it’s the match that the whole event is being sold on, more or less, and will go on last. Shawn Michaels being added as a referee brings up questions about where his loyalties lie, but I can see HBK calling this right down the middle, an option most fans won’t be looking at. This will be a good match, whatever the outcome, because these two guys have a good chemistry and will pull out some fresh spots for this gimmick contest. I would prefer Orton to win here, leading to Bryan being kept away from the WWE title, win the Royal Rumble, and go to WrestleMania XXX for his big moment, but I don’t think it’s a likely scenario. Bryan is the favourite here, based on fan reaction and previous events, but I am going to predict that, through some sort of “non-HBK” interference, Randy Orton will capture the WWE title. Where Bryan stands after the event is anyone’s guess, but perhaps my WrestleMania idea isn’t as crazy as I think.
